MISSION POETRY - A POETRY MISSION for 4th (ish) graders

Parents, need a bit of help with lesson plans?  The following is a lesson geared for 4th graders. In it, a poem entitled "We All Sense Fear" is used to address fear in a not so scary way. The lessons take the form of "Missions" and include activities in vocabulary, reading, drawing, critical thinking, as well as an activity that explores our five senses. All of the missions relate to the poem.

Supplies: 
Lined paper
Drawing paper
Colored pencils, crayons or markers​

It is time for Mission Poetry!  

P.S. The video can be played in "movie" or "slide" modes.  You may want to preview the entire mission and then allow your child to move through the slides at their own pace.  As always, your child will appreciate you checking their work and also your input on the poem itself. The lesson can facilitate meaningful dialogue about fear and anxiety which you may find particularly useful given our current COVID19 world.  Please feel free to share the lesson.  Many parents are in need of supplemental teaching material. Have you ever seen a lady bug jump
over a snake that is hungry and  sssly?
I saw it! She scaled the sss-peed bump
then ever so brave, flew ‘cross the sky.

Have you ever heard a spider announce
“Ahhhhh” as he spindled down to the ground?
I heard it! The little Sir bungeed and bounced
then ever so brave, did a cannonball down.

​Have you ever felt a daffodil shiver?
The Ma’am bent down in an April shower
I felt it! Her petals shook and quivered
Then ever so brave, in May she did flower.

​Have you ever tasted cold, stark fear
startling awake from a sleep’s horror movie?
Did your tongue’s tiny buds stand up and jeer?
Were you ever so brave, did you spit-tooie!

​The Ma’ams and Sirs with no minute to spare
Found their growl could crescendo and roar
An emotional embrace from an unlikely pair
Bravery hugged fear allowing courage to soar

​You too hold that key and know just what to do
Be ever so brave, unlock your door and walk through   ​
